Shimla, Himachal Pradesh, India
Nationality    Indian
Occupation    Actress, producer, entrepreneur
Years active    1998–present
Spouse(s)    Gene Goodenough (m. 2016)

Preity Zinta (pronounced [ˈpriːt̪i ˈzɪɳʈaː]; born 31 January 1975) is an Indian film actress and entrepreneur. She has appeared in Hindi films of Bollywood, as well as Telugu, Punjabi and English language films. After graduating with degrees in English honours and criminal psychology, Zinta made her acting debut in Dil Se.. in 1998, followed by a role in Soldier in the same year. These performances earned her a Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut, and she was later recognised for her role as a teenaged single mother in Kya Kehna (2000). She subsequently established a career with a variety of character types; her film roles along with her screen persona have been credited with contributing to a change in the concept of a Hindi film heroine, and won her several accolades.

Zinta received the Filmfare Award for Best Actress in 2003 for her performance in the drama Kal Ho Naa Ho. She went on to play the lead female role in two consecutive annual top-grossing films in India, the science fiction film Koi... Mil Gaya (2003), which is her biggest commercial success, and the star-crossed romance Veer-Zaara (2004), which earned her critical acclaim. She was later noted for her portrayal of independent, modern Indian women in Salaam Namaste (2005) and Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), top-grossing productions in overseas markets. These accomplishments have established her as a leading actress of Hindi cinema. Her first international film role was in the Canadian film Heaven on Earth, for which she was awarded the Silver Hugo Award for Best Actress at the 2008 Chicago International Film Festival.

Early life and background
Preity Zinta was born on 31 January 1975 into a family from Rohru in Shimla district, Himachal Pradesh. Her father, Durganand Zinta, was an officer in the Indian Army. He died in a car accident when she was 13 years old; the accident also involved her mother, Nilprabha, who was severely injured and consequently remained bedridden for two years. Zinta called the tragic accident and her father's death a significant turning point in her life, which forced her to mature rapidly. She has two brothers; Deepankar and Manish, a year older and a year younger respectively. Deepankar is a commissioned officer in the Indian Army, while Manish lives in California.

Zinta, who describes herself as having been a tomboy as a child, has emphasised her father's military background as having given her a lasting impression on how family life was to be conducted. He asserted the importance of discipline and punctuality to the children. She studied at the Convent of Jesus and Mary boarding school in Shimla. Although she confesses to loneliness in the boarding school, she noted that it was compensated by her finding a "... perfect set of friends" there. As a student, she developed a love for literature, particularly the works of William Shakespeare and poetry.[11] According to Zinta, she enjoyed schoolwork and received good grades; in her free time she played sports, especially basketball.

Bollywood

And one such chapter from the book of Bollywood’s failed relationships is that of our beloved Preity G Zinta. Every time a new love knocked on her doors, Preity embraced it with all her faith, trust and love. Only to realise that destiny had something else or shall we say, someone else written for her. Let’s take a look at the many men in Preity G Zinta’s life.

Grapevine was abuzz with the news of Abhishek Bachchan and Preity Zinta’s sparkling chemistry not just on sets but off the sets too. Their camaraderie in films like Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Jhoom Barabar Jhoom was noticed by many. However, when asked about the relationship, both Abhishek and Preity always said that they were the best of friends in the industry.

The Australian cricket star, Brett Lee, was once rumoured to have dated Preity Zinta for a brief period. Though Preity always denied the news, Brett was quite outspoken when it came to expressing his feelings for Preity openly. Time and again, Brett and Preity were seen enjoying secret dates in Mumbai. In interviews, Lee went on to say that he found Preity to be a really lovely girl and was someone whose work he totally loved.

Yuvraj Singh and Preity Zinta’s camaraderie started giving fodder to the gossip mills ever since the duo came together during IPL. Yuvraj was the star batsmen of Preity’s KXIP team. Pictures of them celebrating their wins and enjoying some quality time together started making headlines. However, both of them always denied the news of any such link-up. In fact, when the news of Yuvraj Singh broke out, Preity said:

Then came the man whom everyone though Preity was destined to be with. After a few years of being “just good friends”, Preity made her relationship with the business tycoon, Ness Wadia, official. From gala events, gold matches, to the wedding of Abhishek and Aishwarya; the duo could be spotted everywhere together. Holding hands, posing for shutterbugs, occasional pecks on the cheek and some rare PDA kept the media on tenterhooks. And right when we were all thinking of a fairytale wedding for the couple, their “too-good-to-be-true” relationship hit rock bottom. In 2009, after having dated for over five years, Preity accused Ness of physical molestation and mental torture. The first alarming sign in their relationship came when Ness Wadia’s mother, Maureen, said:

While Preity was fighting the case against Ness, she had mentioned few of his friends as witnesses. As per many reports, Gene Goodenough was one of Ness’ close friends who decided to stand by Preity Zinta during that trying phase. Gene works as the Senior Vice President of the US-based hydroelectric power company. Bitten in love many times, soon Preity and Gene decided to make their relationship official. Although the duo kept their marriage plans and venue a secret, media kept running stories on Preity’s impending wedding with someone she referred to as a “happy space with a happy guy” from LA.

About Meena Kumari - Lifestyle, facts and much more

About Meena Kumari

Meena Kumari (1 August 1933– 31 March 1972), born Mahjabeen Bano, was an Indian film actress, singer and poet under the pseudonym "Naaz". Popularly known as The Tragedy Queen, she is also called Female Guru Dutt of Hindi films and is often remembered as the Cinderella of Indian films.

The beautiful face and expressive eyes of Meena Kumari have been captured in a Google doodle devoted to the late legendary actress Meena Kumari for her 85th birth anniversary on Wednesday. "As shown in the doodle, Meena Kumari captivated audiences with her beautiful, expressive eyes," reads  the official Google Doodle page.

Indian film critics regarded Meena Kumari as a "historically incomparable" actress of Hindi cinema. During a career spanning 33 years, she starred in about 92 films such as Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam, Pakeezah, Mere Apne, Aarti, Baiju Bawra, Parineeta, Dil Apna Aur Preet Parai, Foot Path, Dil Ek Mandir and Kaajal.

Vinod Mehta (writer of Meena Kumari – The Classic Biography) was told by a director: "Even Dilip Kumar (the tragedy king) found it difficult to keep his calm in front of her". Raaj Kumar would often forget his dialogues while working with Meena Kumari on set. Madhubala was also a fan of Meena Kumari and said: "She has the most unique voice. No other heroine has it." Satyajit Ray described Kumari as "undoubtedly an actress of the highest calibre". Amitabh Bachchan said " No one, not any one, ever spoke dialogues the way Meena Kumari did .. no one .. not anyone to date.. and perhaps never will". Music Director Naushad said "Hindi film industry may produce great actresses but there would never be another Meena Kumari". Meena Kumari empathized greatly with Marilyn Monroe, the fact that Marilyn's husband, Arthur Miller, had some passing similarities to Meena's husband Kamal Amrohi, made the identification closer. It is said that throughout her life, Meena Kumari had a love–hate relationship with the movies.

Meena Kumari's 85th birth anniversary: As we recall the turbulent life and times of the legendary actor, we wonder how the tragedy queen was received and seen in her own time. Was she born to suffer? And did she only suffer – was there nothing else to her life?

Over the last few years, feminists have appropriated Kangana Ranaut as one of their own for her outspoken outbursts and the courage of calling a spade a spade in an industry that doesn’t even recognise that something called a ‘spade’ exists, especially if it involves a woman. Kangana’s reputation as a glass ceiling breaker now precedes her fame as an actor. As we recall the turbulent life and times of Meena Kumari, we do wonder how the tragedy queen was received and seen in her own time. Was she billed as a feminist? Was she the ‘hero’ in a Man’s World? Was she fearless and fearsome? Or just another mythologised vulnerable woman defeated in love? Was she a victim of male violence? That can’t be true because, for one, we do know that she used men. For another, she certainly did not have the scripted and calculated appearance of heroism that the otherwise talented Kangana seems to be projecting.

There was something genuinely affecting about Meena Kumari. She didn’t tailor herself for anyone. Though she died at a shockingly young and tantalisingly seductive age of 38 it appears that she lived a life of 90. She passed away, merely weeks after Pakeezah (1972) – arguably her most-loved film – released. She didn’t even live to see this torturous film’s grand success. Even today, the name Meena Kumari evokes so many things – melodrama, tragedy, pain, loneliness, alcoholic movie star and paradoxically, even the image of a quintessential Indian woman. And then there’s that much-abused adjective “the Meena Kumari complex”, used to define anyone with a sad sob story.

Yes, she did have a sob story. But don’t you think it was media-created? The woman herself seemed to revel in her misery. Was she born to suffer? And did she only suffer – was there nothing else to her life, the glamour, highs of fame, comforts, large, fawning staff and the poignant pleasures of love? As a child, Baby Meena had seen plenty of ups and downs, the roller coaster that life had laid out for her as a red carpet since the day she was born. We do know, thanks to Vinod Mehta’s adoring Meena Kumari: The Classic Biography in which the late journalist-columnist repeatedly refers to her as “my heroine” that she had a volatile love life and she made no bones about it. Not that she fed information to the press about the various men in her life – she wasn’t a publicity-seeker, by all standards – but she very much lived her colourful life out in the public glare. She’s one of the few celebs who grew and were raised right under the watchful eyes of the hawk-eyed media.

According to a popular Bollywood legend, Meena’s father had left her at the door of an orphanage as a child. After some time, he returned to fetch the baby and to his shock, found ants crawling creepily all over her body. Analysing that haunting childhood incident, Mehta observed, “I believe that moment remained in her subconscious mind. Here was a traumatised soul. She could not have been a happy person. Life had decided that she will suffer. She was fortunate that this unhappiness was appreciated in her roles. She understood this emotion so well.”

Meena Kumari won four Filmfare Awards in the Best Actress category. She was the recipient of the inaugural Filmfare Awards (1954) Best Actress Award for Baiju Bawra and had a consecutive win in the second Filmfare Awards (1955) for Parineeta. Kumari made history at the 10th Filmfare (1963), by receiving all of the nominations for Best Actress and won for her performance in Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. In the 13th Filmfare (1966), Kumari won her last Best Actress Filmfare award for Kaajal.

The greatest hallmark of Meena Kumari laid in her ability to depict the struggle of Indian women existing especially in the 50s and 60s. Kumari's onscreen persona is described as a perfect example of a traditional Bharatiya Nari by the Indian film fraternity, such as Mohammed Zahur Khayyam and Javed Akhtar.[16] Her portrayal of "Sahibjaan", a nautch girl with a golden heart in Pakeezah under Kamal Amrohi's direction became a historical document.

Kapoor next reunited with director Vishal Bhardwaj to film Haider (2014), an adaptation of William Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet set during the Kashmir conflict of 1995, in which he played the titular role opposite Tabu and Shraddha Kapoor. Kapoor described the film as the "toughest" of his career, and waived his fees to star in it.For the role, he shaved his head and learned to speak in a Kashmiri dialect. Haider garnered critical acclaim, though was controversial among Indian nationalists for its portrayal of the conflict in Kashmir. Sanjukta Sharma of Mint found the film to be an "immensely effective reimagination of Shakespeare" and particularly praised Kapoor for playing his part with "impressive zest and inventiveness". Writing for Hindustan Times, critic Anupama Chopra wrote that Kapoor initially seemed uncomfortable in the complex central role, but added that he "slowly  comes to inhabit Haider, veering from rage to jealousy to madness in a heartbeat." Kapoor won several awards for the role, including the Screen Award, Producers Guild Film Award and Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
